I just don’t see the Yankees of this era doing that. He’s the guy you go get if you’re willing to pay that kind of money. He’s the guy who gets it done on both sides of the ball. In this offseason, the only non-risk is Carlos Correa. But they also may not want to move Volpe off a position where he’s comfortable. Kuty: At this point, you have to think that Volpe is the shortstop of the future, but the Yankees maybe will think about moving him to second or third base at some point because Peraza is the better fielding shortstop. My guess is the Yankees go cheap at short, and I’d be fine with Simmons or Iglesias. They probably can afford to sign Simmons or Iglesias and re-sign Anthony Rizzo to play first base. The Yankees also have other needs this offseason. The Yankees already have two $300 million players plus Aaron Judge probably will get an extension worth more than $200 million. I’d be fine bringing in Story for two years and a club option because it’s only money, but Cashman doesn’t have an unlimited budget. I like Story, but he’s had some arm issues that have affected his defense. I know both hit right-handed, and if go stopgap ideally you’d bring in a left-handed hitter to balance the lineup a little. Iglesias is seventh all-time in fielding percentage for a shortstop and Simmons is 10th, so the Yankees could do a lot worse than picking one of those two. He’s also an elite fielding shortstop in addition to being a pretty good hitter with a little pop. Hitting wise, as recently as 2018 he batted. First off, he is one of the best fielding shortstops of all-time. ![]() 223 average with no power last year and say he can’t hit, but dig a little deeper. Can the Yankees get him for two years at $60 million or one year at $35 million? If Story is going to only take one or two years, he’s only going to accept a huge annual salary. And, sure enough, no team is projected to gain more WAR at shortstop this season than the Yankees, mostly because Jeter retired.Miller: Well, it’ll probably going to come down to money and term for Story. The truth is that, according to WAR at least, the Yankees had the least-productive shortstop situation in all of baseball last year, so even a shortstop depth chart headlined by Didi Gregorius was bound to be one of the game’s most improved in 2015. ![]() We slagged on Jeter a bit last season for all the attention paid to his yearlong retirement tour despite his plainly awful numbers. And the biggest position at which they got better? Shortstop - former home of future Hall of Famer Derek Jeter. 1 Fangraphs’ projections - which, like all preseason predictions, come with a lot of uncertainty - see the Yankees as a slightly above-average team this season, and their 84-78 record last year fit that description as well.īut another interesting note about the 2015 Yankees is that their position-player corps figures to be one of the most improved in the American League, according to the projected wins above replacement (WAR) listed on Fangraphs’ depth charts. Certainly the Yankees are no longer the dominant powerhouse they were in the late 1990s and early 2000s, nor are they even the outrageously expensive (but championship-starved) juggernaut of the mid-to-late 2000s. The other day, several of us in the FiveThirtyEight office were musing about the New York Yankees’ chances in 2015.
